Sprockets and Chain Wheel Discs

Sprockets are the complement to an optimal chain drive (drive chains or conveyor chains). The good interaction between sprocket and chain forms the basis for a long service life of these two proven machine elements.

Sprocket design

We supply steel sprockets in the following designs:

A = Plate wheel (without hub)
B = Hub on one side (welded on)
C = Hub on both sides (welded on)
D = Hub on one side (solid)
E = Hub on both sides (solid)

Other designs, such as wheels with split hubs or cast sprockets, are also available on request.

For chains subject to heavy contamination, we recommend fitting milled dirt-relief grooves. In special cases, an enlarged tooth gap clearance can also be provided by arrangement.

Sprocket materials

The service life of sprockets depends on the forces acting on them and the wear resistance of the selected sprocket material.

The following materials are preferably used:

  • Steel per DIN EN 10025 – S355J0 (St52-3)
  • Quenched and tempered steel per DIN EN 10083 – C45
  • Plastics (e.g., PA 6 or POM)

For heavily loaded sprockets, heat treatment of the teeth (e.g., induction hardening) is recommended.

Other materials can be determined together with us as needed.
Please tell us about your application.
We are happy to advise you.

Sprockets for conveyor chains

When designing conveyor systems, sprockets with Z ≥ 8 should preferably be used. At speeds above 0.6 m/s, only sprockets with Z ≥ 10 should be installed.
Conveyor sprockets are supplied as standard with a pilot bore.
On request, we also supply the wheels with finished bore, keyway, and thread for a set screw.
Fitted seats for ball bearings can also be provided in the hubs.

Drive wheels for roller chains

To achieve as uniform a chain speed as possible, the number of teeth should not be less than 15.
Smaller tooth counts disproportionately increase joint surface wear on the chain.
The maximum number of teeth should not exceed 150.
Larger tooth counts also lead to increased chain wear.
Favorable gear ratios are around 3:1.
From 8:1 upward, the efficiency of the ratio deteriorates and chain wear increases.

Order information

For optimal manufacturing of sprockets, the following information is important:

  1. Number of sprockets required
  2. Number of teeth on the sprockets
  3. Type of associated chain (DIN or ISO designation, pitch, inner width, bushing diameter or roller diameter. For Gall chains, the pin diameter d1 must be specified.)
  4. Sprocket material
  5. Design without or with hub (in which case the hub length NL and hub diameter DN must be specified)
  6. Pilot bore or finished bore (with fit dimension)
  7. Keyway dimensions (e.g., per DIN 6885-1)
  8. Dimensions of the set screw thread

Outside (tip) circle diameter Dk
a)Bushing conveyor chains without rollers:
Dk = Do + 0,8 D

b)Bushing conveyor chains with non-marking rollers:
Dk = Do + 0,6 D1

c)Bushing conveyor chains with running rollers:
Dk = Do + 0,4 D1

d)Bushing chains:
Dk = Do + 0,8 .. 1,0 D1

e)Gall chains:
Dk = Do + D1

The above calculations yield guideline values. These also apply to the hollow pin and trough conveyor chains listed in the catalog. The exact outside (tip) circle diameter is determined by us, or according to the customer's specifications.
